Irelynn Doherty

Art is my outlet for the words that go unsaid. Every project I make I infuse it with my own experiences to impact whoever’s listening.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I love directing short films. Don’t get me wrong I love visual arts. But what I love about visual art is the story that drives it. When I was moving into high school, I lost all my motivation for drawing the way I used too. But I found that same passion in my first comm tech class. I was given the assignment to write a short film. It was a chance to not only tell a part of my story, but bring to life the same story’s I was so full of as a child. Since that day I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in my experiences. One of my favourite quotes is “The most personal is the most creative” by Martin Scorsese. I want to infuse every project I create with a little bit of myself. When I’ve felt my most alone, movies have been my safe place. I want my experiences to be able to make at least one person feel the same.

What would you do with $25,000?

$25,000 is an absolutely life changing amount of money. If I was chosen I would use the money to go back to H.B Beal Secondary to fund a short film project with a student crew. I was given the same opportunity from award winning director Shannon Walsh while at Beal and it truly cemented my career path. It made me believe I was able to do things I could never dream, like become a director. If I was awarded this money I would have the funds to go back and create the same opportunity for students.
