I call them my “creatures” because they’re these anthropomorphic figures with variable numbers of limbs of vastly different sizes and shapes. They’re faceless and creepy but they’re made of crochet, and because it’s crochet, it evokes comfort and discomfort in tandem.
Where do you find inspiration?I find myself returning to what I call “invisible” materials for inspiration. I want to take the things we discard and toss in the bin and turn them into workable materials in my practice. A great example of this is the way I’ve utilized single-use plastic bags. I think it opens up an interesting dialogue where we rethink what we toss aside.
What would you do with $25,000?As a first generation college graduate, cost of studio practice comes directly from my own pocket. I recently got into the MFA Sculpture program at MICA in Baltimore, and $25,000 would help me offset the cost of attendance to further my artistic practice and goals.
