It illuminates all of the hidden parts of us. It lets us glimpse the undefinable. It is joy and it is grief. Art shows us who we are..
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Every type of art is my favorite at the time I’m creating it. I love to write and sing, and I love to scribble on napkins at restaurants while I’m waiting on my food. But if I have to choose one, I love to work with wood. I get really excited when I find a branch on the side of the road or find scraps someone thought was trash. Images and sounds and experiences start flooding my mind. All of the potential. I get absolutely possessed by branch weaving. It is a labor of love. That is my favorite.
Where do you find inspiration?Inspiration is in the heartbeat. I eat and breathe and live in a constant state of inspiration. I had such a dark and dangerous childhood. It was my only way to make sense of the world around me and to escape; to face things in my own time. It's like my future self gave me that gift. She knew what I needed. I find that I am more inspired in the space that comes between joy and pain. The space where you can breathe again. The colors are always a little brighter there. It is where hope meets me.
What would you do with $25,000?I know what I wouldn’t do. I wouldn’t pay a bill. I would be intentionally self-centered with the gift. There are a lot of supplies and instruction that I’ve had to pass on because I couldn’t afford them. I love to create art, but I’ve never been good to the business side of it. I think I could use some education in that regard. I think it’s important to have mentors and look up the successful people in any endeavor and so I would get advice on how to spend that money as to not squander it.
