I am most passionate about creating mixed- media compositions, mosaic art and collages in which I enjoy incorporate a variety of meaningful materials together. These materials are often torn, recycled, broken, and/ or discarded. Through the process of pieces these precious materials together to create new meaning and purpose, I find grateful fulfillment. This process also encourages individuals to embrace the joy of utilizing non- traditional material in a fun and exciting manner.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in many of the special needs students that I teach as well as their parents who care for them on a daily basic. They love to create and art gives them a voice and well as empowers them to become creative thinkers. Inspirations also comes from my own daughter who lives with autism and loves to create beautiful things. Also my mother, who taught me how to sew and be creative as a child by utilizing easily accessible materials and scraps that I had available to me at home.
What would you do with $25,000?If awarded this opportunity I would utilize the funds to expand my current visual arts program that is geared towards introducing individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities to the exciting world of visual art. This opportunity would help to expand their creative self- expression, create a circle of support, and further advance their knowledge about art education and collaboration. Through their involvement Individuals gain a strong sense of pride and a sense of belonging.
