What is your favorite type of art to create?

My choice of collage as a medium originates from my first year of graduate school in Painting when I moved from my hometown in Louisville, Kentucky to the Painting Graduate School Program at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. My first year in this new environment was so challenging that I actually had a great deal of difficulty creating any worthwhile paintings. It was not until I ripped up one of my paper pieces in frustration and threw it on the floor that I discovered the beauty of chance.

Where do you find inspiration?

Through my artwork, I seek to capture the contradicting energy and serenity of an unpredictable natural internal psychological landscape as well as in the outer world of global events. I create mixed-media collages that capture acts or tokens of remembrance, tribute and reflection for the loss of home, youth and even life for all those who have suffered loss. Displaced Home could be a psychological state similar to disassociation from self. Home becomes a symbol of the relationship of self.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would be able to provide myself with a studio that will accommodate the construction, viewing and painting of large canvases. I would also use these funds to transport my large paintings to exhibits of my work. You can see my work on my website: https://jankirsteinrigor.com
