I love creating art because it grounds me. There’s a knowing in being an artist and that brings me a sense of calm and stability.

I have leaned into figurative/abstract portraiture. Using bright colors, bold shapes and contrast to bring the figures that I paint to life. I start with using a graphic design app on my phone to get my ideas down, then transfer that idea to my canvas using acrylic paint as my medium.
Where do you find inspiration?I grab inspiration from life experiences and fellow artists. Growing up in the suburbs, cultural expression wasn’t typically welcomed with openness and respect. Eventually, I grew out of this belief that I needed to suppress anything about myself or my cultural identity as an African American woman. I now use my art to challenge others to do the same. Following other artists who also share my sentiments helped expose me to other styles of art and eventually, helped me come into my own style.
What would you do with $25,000?I would move to an area where I can further immerse myself in the art world. I live in a community that doesn’t stimulate me. It doesn’t offer much opportunity for artists to grow. If I could be surrounded by more culture, museums and galleries that would be a dream come true.
