As an art teacher, many students asked me why I create art. In return I asked them, "Why do you breathe?"
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I am a lifelong photographer, who has been expressing his love for film and darkroom techniques for almost 60 years. Lately I have started working experimentally and cataloging deliberate mistakes to create beautiful imperfections that one doesn't see by working digitally. Perfection and sharpness are all overrated!
Where do you find inspiration? Most people just look, but artists see. I believe it is the job of an artist to find beauty or meaning where most do not look. That and the current state of things begged for an artistic response. A camera is also a machine that destroys fascists.
What would you do with $25,000?There are so many places that I want to visit with so many cameras, but most of the money would go into my year old non-profit, Brick City Photography Center. I firmly believe that without places like Brick City the darkroom will fade away. Most folks who have experienced traditional darkroom work in school lose access to them. I cannot allow that to happen. I want to educate and share the wonders of analog, darkroom and historical photo processes with whomever wishes to experience them!
