What is your favorite type of art to create?

Does 'mashing things together' count as a type? I do this with mixed media- from charcoal and thrifted electronics to physics and poetry. My favorite type is the kind where I have pieces that shouldn't fit together. I love the creativity that is bred in the constraint of a contrasting pairing. I enjoy taking a mass produced TJ Maxx artwork or a Michael's canvas painted by a novice and discarded, staring at it until I see something new, then painting or gluing or drawing or sewing over it.

Where do you find inspiration?

At the risk of sounding oh-so-quirky, family owned grocery stores and gas stations. There's something so warm about the buildings that exist as physical evidence of a million small decisions from people who make it work with what they have. The walls are always full of things put up and forgotten to take down. There's a sense of humanity in it.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would use it to purchase the necessary components for one of my hair-brained inventions, rent a space to put it together, afford enough moments of staring at it until the art reveals itself to me and then grab the nearest artistic vehicle for translating it. I would use a small amount to fund a drive to collect old, discarded art and go to schools to guide others to learning the art of creative constraint and allowing the moment to create art through you.
