It brings what’s inside my soul out into the world. I am a second-generation artist—creativity is in my blood.

While I do love painting and printmaking, sculpting in clay is the bomb! Instead of creating an illusion of something, I’m actually building that something. Clay is malleable, and bends to my every whim. It’s versatile; I can make functional things for the home, or expressive pieces even portraits.
Where do you find inspiration?I am inspired by: family; history; African masks and ritual pottery; and the maturing body. I am currently working on a series dealing with the dynamics of dementia.
What would you do with $25,000?I would underwrite exhibition expenses for an upcoming mother-daughter show; purchase my own kiln (and a maintenance contract!); make a down payment on a building (ideally, an old fire station) that I would convert into a live/work/community classroom space; travel to Puebla, Mexico to research the slave trade there; travel to Africa to study with native potters.
