I’m a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Nation. I specialize in Eastern Woodland art to bring awareness that we are still here.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My favorite medium is fiber Art. I’m best known for my Wampanoag Twined Basketry and Twined Sash and Garter sets but my greatest accomplishment is my fully Twined Turkey Feather Mantle. I created the first Twined Turkey Feather Mantle in My community in more then 400 years. I have also brought back a method called Twined Porcupine Quill False Embroidery that also hasn’t been done in 400 year either. Next I hope to bring back a Twined Rabbit Skin blanket. I’m also a Wampum Belt maker
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from my Aquinnah Wampanoag Culture. I specialize in ancient techniques. Bringing these technique back to my people and teaching the younger generations is so important . There is a revitalization of cultural knowledge which is equally important to me to be part of. I have been teaching Twined basketry and other cultural arts for 35 years passing on this knowledge is incredibly rewarding.
What would you do with $25,000?I will use this award money to continue my Cultural work. To purchase the many materials that are needed to do this work. To cover costs of travels to the different communities to participate in Cultural events and Art shows. To bring awareness to the vibrant Aquinnah Wampanoag Culture Arts and Life Ways.
