I make art to actualize a maternal legacy of making, and provide a ledger for spiritual development by abstracting my personal history.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
My favourite thing to do is to walk across a big canvas with paint on my feet. I love to make large scale abstract paintings, I like it when my body feels small within a sea of canvas. I am energized by gesture; to bound, to leap, to smush, myself against the surface of a painting. I react to mark making; constellations of marks begin to take representational forms as they are buried beneath washes of thin paint. The best part is when the painting begins to blink and breathe with its own life.
Where do you find inspiration?I generate inspiration when I commune with what matters to me. Womanhood, ancestry, myth, dreams, Kahlil Gibran, sex, love, Sade, dancing, the body, salty skin, texture, nature, rivers, oceans, biomes, Juno space imagery, astrology, reiki, heartbreak, growing food, sun/moon. Inspiration is felt through a knowingness, I have got it when I hold a memory or feeling long enough to make it to the canvas, if I can make it there with the initial impulse I know I have something real to explore.
What would you do with $25,000?I would pay down my student loan. I would rent a studio somewhere warm and stay there alone. I would buy linen and canvas and stretch canvases. I would go to dance classes. I would apply to artist residencies and if accepted pay the airfare. I would paint 8 plus hours a day. I would invite my Mother to come stay and make a body of work together.
