Raking is a deeply personal, profoundly transcending effort that serves to heal my traumatized body and severe, chronic PTSD. Spinning Sands
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Transforming sand into intricate, meditative mandalas and labyrinths inspired by nature, sacred geometry, and the rhythms of the Oregon coast. Using only a rake, without other measuring tools, I start in the center and, in a series of repetitive waltzes, dance/rake my way out to the edge creating giant, symmetrical designs in the sand. Some designs are created with help from small groups of people who gather to remember a lost loved one, celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or even get engaged.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration from the artwork itself and from all those who encourage me. Raking is a deeply spiritual experience that lifts me out of my terribly broken body for a few hours and it has quite literally saved my life. Using my body as a natural compass fills me with a sense of peace, vitality, and strength. I feel alive and well, even if only for those few precious moments. I share my health recovery story to encourage others with chronic health problems and, together, we walk forward.
What would you do with $25,000?I live a simple, almost monk-like existence on the central Oregon Coast. I do not travel easily, maintain a rigidly controlled diet, and still need lots of rest. So I essentially rest in my beautiful sanctuary in the woods and rake every chance I get. This money would provide some much needed financial stability! And, I could update Spinning Sands’ wardrobe and get some new rakes. Maybe finally get my orange and yellow kicks. The only two colors I am missing from my collection!
