Exploring the object identity of things that fill our everyday lives and their associative psychological, historical, and narrative power I paint large and small scale narrative portraits. Using the universal and symbolic language of food; I speak about both the personal and the universal. A bottle is never just a bottle- it is a holder of memory, identity- like Morandi, a custard cup is not simply a cup- it is Madonna and Child or Tom Wesselman- coke bottle an icon of the American Dream.
Where do you find inspiration? We all must eat. How do the objects we consume and surround ourselves become a part of our cultural and psychological understanding of self? Through reimagining the radical storytelling power of food, I paint the theater of the dinner table. Synthesizing contemporary life and mythology, I map culture, place, and self through the objects we consume; viewing the table- scape as a stage, commons, and a form of narrative portraiture.
What would you do with $25,000?I believe deeply in arts power to change the world. With this incredible opportunity I’d use the funds to painting full-time & share my story. I believe deeply in being an advocate for those who experience the world differently. I’d use this platform to create new dialogues around using art as a tool to open people’s minds creating spaces of inclusion, love and hope. Receiving Forbes 30under30 and been an ambassador for the Kennedy center I know the privilege & responsibility we have as artist
