My favorite type of art to create is work that not only draws one’s eye but makes someone feel something. Some of my works are things I think would be interesting conceptually while others bring awareness to social events; specifically towards the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/ People. Being a young Native woman from a rural community that’s packed with violence and drugs, I want my work to draw attention and inspire others to use their talents in a positive way.
Where do you find inspiration?I draw inspiration mainly from nature. I’ve always loved animals and plants. I am inspired by a lot of what I call the “unloved;” finding beauty in oddities. While recently developing my portrait skills, I enjoy sticking to my roots of animals, plants and bones; often combining them in my works. I find it important to emphasize beauty in the good, bad, and ugly as it all has the potential to bring about some form of impact and change via representation, even if I make a piece just to make it.
What would you do with $25,000?I would personally like to donate to some form of charity. My main goal would be to donate at least $5,000 to some charity that would help MMIW/P as mentioned before and cancer, as I’ve lost my dad and his mom to cancer in less than 4 years of each other. The rest I would distribute between student loans, setting up my own tattoo shop, bills and saving.
