Katharina Short

I create art is to stay connected to humanity. Art is a language we all speak though few words are required, we all are able to feel art.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

The work I love to create tells a story about the everyday lives we live. In that vein my work represents modern folk art. I create meaning and infer love and unity through my imagery of us as spiritual beings having a human experience. While that may sound a little or a lot “woo”, it allows me to reach for an extra depth I try to convey while creating my art. I want to remind us that though we all live in different economic and geographical spots, we tend to have more in common than not.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in the cycles of life. Birth, death, love, loss, hope, dreams, fears. Nature is a big teacher for me, so my shapes and forms and stories are often linked to and centered around the seasons, humans in nature and animals both fantastical and imagined interacting in these made up idyllic landscapes. I create out the inspiration to write a poem, with color and images instead of with rhymes and words. I love the works of Pablo Neruda and Freida Kahlo. If they had a baby….

What would you do with $25,000?

The funding would go to fortify my practice and create a body of work that I could share with more Children’s Hospitals. I have had my work featured in an entire wing of Lucille Packards Children's Hosptial at Stanford University and the feedback I get is life altering. I was also a parent at this same hospital and lost my new born while there, and as I wandered the halls of the hospital in shock, art kept me connected to earth. I want to expand my capacity to help other parents in similar ways.
