I create art because I feel so content after making art. As an indigenous woman I use art to express my feelings, creativity & culture

I love creating art that is connected to my Lakota culture. I live in San Diego California, 1,200 miles away from my tribes on the Cheyenne River and Rosebud Reservations in South Dakota and our sacred lands in the Black Hills of South Dakota. My favorite type of art I love to create is Lakota cultural art, using beads, crystals, leather, painting on rawhide, using Buffalo horn and buffalo bone. I love making medicine pouches, par flèche pouches, medicine wheels, dream catchers, canvas murals.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in nature mostly. flowers, forests, animals, ocean life, insects, sunsets and stars. A beautiful landscape, I am inspired by my tribal designs which are geometric patterns, floral patterns, animal designs, subdued and vibrant colors. Living far from my tribe has given me the drive and passion to continue creating art from my lineage. Space, distance and time has not kept me from being who I am. Art is medicine to me. Art is life, you can find beauty wherever you look.
What would you do with $25,000?I would spend the $25,000 on art supplies, a home art studio, a van I could use for my art business for art classes when I travel, I would also like to develop more culture art classes to share with community, children, families and elders. I also would like to use the money to take more art classes of various multi- media courses to advance my skills. Art is medicine and I believe it’s so beneficial to our daily lives. I would love to advocate more art for healing and art as medicine for all.
