Connect What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite type of art is mixed-media, which involves the reusing of reclaimed items. It is important to continue the lives of items that have been created and then discarded. Those items have more to say and, like people, deserve second chances. I blend paints, markers, ephemera, and even other reclaimed items. Above all, my favorite type of art is collaborative, in which we gather to create and share our voices.

Where do you find inspiration?

My work is inspired by my search to express both the sameness of things and the differences that are exposed when you look closely. I am inspired by found objects that speak to me, letting me know, almost immediately, their next journey…next life. I am inspired by the desire to become a voice for those who do not have a platform. My art helps me in my work with, and understanding of, other communities that often are invisible. My art has become an inspirational tool for myself and others.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 dollars to continue making art, providing myself the time needed for both inspiration and creation. I will definitely continue fostering community healing and connection through art. Working with the Iskashitaa Refugee Network, I lead the Refugee Garden Art Program, empowering refugees to share their cultural narratives, reduce isolation, and build resilience through creative, hands-on artistic civic engagement. The money will allow me time and supplies to continue.
