As a disabled and homebound abstract artist, I create to forget about the uncertainty of my future now that COVID has damaged my brain.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Because of my brain injury causing an inability to stand, a constant tremor, and difficulty concentrating for longer than 10 minutes, I create abstract expressionist paintings. These allow me to create laying on the floor next to my canvas and use large gestural layers that dry before returning to the painting for another short burst of creative flow.
Where do you find inspiration?I began painting after sustaining brain and multi organ damage and was completely bedridden in a dark quiet room for 2.5 years. I painted to express grief over the sudden loss of my former life, and to express emotions because I was unable to verbally communicate. Now that I am able to look through windows again, I find inspiration from the beauty of nature as seen from my bed and sofa. I’m also inspired by the kindness of friends and family who have supported me the past 5 years.
What would you do with $25,000?Suffering from a new complex and disabling condition caused by COVID, my medical and caregiving expenses are incredibly high and certain treatments are unaffordable. I would use this money to try new experimental treatments that are otherwise unattainable.
