Quarter-Finalist

Kodak Lindsey

I’ve always felt communication a futile pursuit and a faulty medium, but for me, art turns ephemeral chaos into something tangible.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I'm a filmmaker because it's the medium I resonate with most. I do love to create art in many other forms: oil painting, sketching with graphite or charcoal, sculpture, animation, acting, dance and choreography, harp, and musical compositions — especially for harp and orchestrated pieces. No matter the medium, I always love creating pieces that involve a pursuit of ravenous curiosity and force me to look deeper into, or at, shadows (literally and metaphorically).

Where do you find inspiration?

The ocean, time spent with my family, or alone. Magnitude and incomprehensible or inexplicable things inspire me - the imagined extraordinary, or the divine within the mundane. For me, the ocean is the most amorphous and sublime landscape. I’m drawn to its mercurial nature and how it embodies and personifies change. With magnitude comes danger, and I love meandering along that thin line — the wanting to see a blade glint, while wanting to run from it. That same magnitude I see in people.

What would you do with $25,000?

I’m currently developing a stop motion feature film dedicated to the late architect, Frank Gehry. He was an incredible artist and I’ve loved the art form of stop motion since I was a little kid making stop motion videos in my bedroom with my little sister. This will be my second feature film that I direct and create, and I would put the money towards this film. This amount of money would make an incredibly large difference in the funding stage of this project.
