I worked with high risk teens on the hardest days of their lives. Painting became how I process what I witness. It’s grief work and repair.

My favorite type of art to create is mixed media on cold pressed paper. I lose time watching the media and color interact. I work freehand, no sketches or planning, layering acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and gold ink wet on wet. They resist and pool in ways I can’t predict. Everything else fades and I get lost in the light coming through, following wherever the paint takes me.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration everywhere! Mr. Rogers, literature, science, ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Animals, everyday angels, love, grief, loss. Process painting became how I work through what I witnessed in crisis care and what stays with me. It provides a space to release what I carry.
What would you do with $25,000?With $25,000, I’d professionally edit and print my Works in Progress workbooks, then pilot them with teens who are struggling. The Beloved’s Studio and The Keeper’s Studio are trauma-informed, art-led workbooks. One is for the teen, one is for their caregiver. They work through the same 20 units at the same time, in the same home, in their own private spaces. Art and healing, side by side. This money gets them into the hands of kids who need them most.
