Artists show us how free we can be as the act of creating is having the audacity to scream into the night that you are unique and you exist.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
The paintings are fun but the greatest thing I do is curate my community and build with those around me. I think that people are so interesting that I could never create something as storied and inspiring as a person. We are complex and hard to contain. What I CAN do is to humanize and feed people to ensure that my community members have some of their basic needs met. I cook so that bread can be broken together and more stories are shared. I also listen as much as I can to soak in the humanity.
Where do you find inspiration?Everywhere. This is cliche but humans are always taking stimuli in at all times. I still think about an interesting leaf or a trail of ants I saw when I was a child. I think of extended stares and almost kisses with women in my past that I am sure have long forgotten me. I am troubled by politics and the parts of our humanity that are the most depraved. Accordingly, I fear how this depravity spreads. I am reminded of how small we are when I feel breezes, see plants grow, and birds fly.
What would you do with $25,000?I would do two things; throw a massive party and use much of it to build an artist retreat center in my ancestral land. The former would be to thank those around me for bringing me to the place I can create and share art. This would entail food, libations, and music. The latter would be to cement a legacy of creatives in a space that I still draw from. This would be open to those who wish to create and need the refuge from the noise.
