My Indigenous culture is alive and relevant, my art is my communication into that place and captures ancient teachings, in today’s world.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I love making traditional Indigenous regalia, beadwork and painting. I have always believed that my artistic expression comes from the giftings we are given in life and always want to try and capture that spirit in anything I do.
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from my passion to fight for my culture to remain alive. Many people are inspired by many things and my deep joy comes when someone can learn the correct teachings of my culture using my art as that conduit for instruction. Cultural advocacy for our Indigenous ways is my life passion and art is one avenue for that work. I do this so my children's children can continue the practices of our people. That is my hope and inspiration and is what cultivates my love for life.
What would you do with $25,000?I would donate it to the non profit organization, Himyuma Outreach. I am an enrolled Nez Perce Tribal Member and after losing a daughter to the spirit of suicide, I founded a 501(c)(3) organization for the intention of cultural preservation and its application in combatting mental health and suicide. The word Himyuma (hiimyume) in my language means "relative or relations", which is a foundational pillar in our traditional teachings. This money will help us in that great effort.
