Lia Mkhitaryan

I create art because I can’t not create, to explore myself, make sense of chaos, and turn fleeting emotions into form and something alive.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite type of art to create is the one that feels like a quiet and authentic conversation with myself. I explore without knowing where I’ll end up, which gives me freedom, curiosity for the unknown, and humility—because we often think we are in control, yet I love when the outcome surprises me and emerges through the process. The canvas is my space for freedom, not control. It’s deeply personal, emotional, intuitive, and unfolds through curiosity, experimentation, and trust.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration from anything, as long as I stay open to it. It feels like being in love. When I face a block, I follow a simple rule: draw exactly what is in front of me, without overthinking, and often inspiration comes through the process itself. I’m deeply interested in exploring my inner world, emotions, human potential, thought, reality, and I’m inspired to observe how everything in the world is interconnected, even when it all appears under different names and forms.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would buy paint and a lot of it (just kidding, I'd buy paint regardless). I’d buy time and mental space with it. I'd invest in this momentum by spreading more creativity through creating more art, publishing a book, or producing talk series without worrying about logistics. With my background of running an art foundation, I naturally think in terms of how whatever I do can be passed forward because it could be useful for someone else. To me, money is only useful if it disappears into creation.
