I’m a painter, and my work is both imaginary and recollected images. Mixed media suits me—I love taking discarded items and found objects, combining them with paint, and creating an image that speaks to the natural world. The rhythm and texture that comes from found objects often leaves an impression more powerful than two-dimensional paint. Landscapes are a favorite genre for me, but I am also interested in the human form.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in the land where I live which has been worked and cared for by my family for generations. My father, brother and I live in Troy, Alabama. Our family began to work this land long ago as sharecroppers. After many years of saving, my ancestors bought the land. The expansive hay fields, rolling hills, dense hardwood forest, bright blue skies, and serene ponds all serve as a muse for my creativity. Art-making is very spiritual to me.
What would you do with $25,000?I’d probably buy some art supplies, my main effort would be to organize an art event to benefit the Bayard Rustin Community Center and Montgomery Pride United, the local LGBTQAI+ community center and area pride organization in Montgomery, Alabama.
