Lucien Rath

I love to create art because it gives me a sense of accomplishment to commit to creating. In the end I have a piece of me at the time.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My technique, taught to me by an important teacher I’ve had in college, is drawing heavy. It involves a charcoal under-drawing on heavy weight paper that is then shellacked and oil painted. I find most purpose in creating expressionist Portraits. I’ve created a few self portraits with this technique.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in the art I consume, films, paintings, music, as well as the people around me. As a person in a wheelchair I find artistic representation of the human form very interesting the different ways human beings embody their personalities and show what they value in their self expression.

What would you do with $25,000?

If I had $25,000 I would buy my long distance girlfriend an engagement ring. We did long distance for 5 years and have finally had the chance to close the distance in the last year. I would invest it into our lives together as well as create a suitable space for us to create our art. She is a dancer and I’ve wanted to start a series surrounding her.
