I love depicting beauty in people and every-day things. I use textured surfaces to tackle subjects of loss, isolation, and social justice.

My favorite art to create is large-scale oil paintings that have a specific theme. “Isolation In Texture” is a series in which I layered, distressed, sanded, and scraped the painted backgrounds and then, from the patterns formed, painted the subject or feeling that each surface evoked. I also make art that has social justice themes and am in the process of creating a series, “American Royalty”, that pays homage to unsung heroes and workers in the United States.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in themes of social justice, and in the beauty of the industrious, working class, unsung heroes. I am inspired visually by texture and enjoy making paintings on textured surfaces. Instead of deciding what I will paint on a blank canvas, I like to let the forms created from the roughened backgrounds tell me what they are meant to be. Ultimately, it serves as a cathartic exploration of my inner self as I deal with subjects of loss, isolation, and freedom.
What would you do with $25,000?If I had $25,000 I would use some of it to travel the U.S. to find inspiration for my “American Royalty” series, which honors workers. I use my own reference photos and would love to talk with people about their life experiences to better understand the social injustices that they face, and the jobs that they do. I would use some of the money for oil paint and wood panels/canvases, as well as putting it towards whatever the next series of paintings I am inspired to create will be.
