I create my art in hopes that others will keep their traditions alive, and to empower others to embrace their own heritage and community.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I create art as a way to share and preserve my heritage. My work is rooted in Wabanaki curve design, a traditional style that carries generations of knowledge, storytelling, and connection. Each piece I make is a continuation of that tradition, but also a reflection of myself, my experiences, my perspective, and my voice. Every line and curve holds meaning, and I feel a deep pride in carrying that forward.
Where do you find inspiration? My inspiration comes from both tradition and the natural world around me. Wabanaki curve design has been influenced by the earth, by the movement of wind, the shapes of trees, and the rhythm of the waves. I look to those same elements when I create. I’ve lived in many different places, but returning home to Maine has been an integral part of my journey. Being here has helped me reconnect with my roots and deepen my understanding of who I am and the people who came before me.
What would you do with $25,000?With this support, I want to create opportunities for indigenous youth to learn the history and practice of curve design, ensuring that this art form remains active and thriving in this community. The funding would go toward essential resources like art supplies, workshop materials, and space to hold classes. It would also allow me to dedicate time to teaching and building a program that is accessible and rooted in cultural knowledge. For me it’s about creating community
