The word "create" in Latin, “créscere”, means to arise, grow, or increase. It wasn’t until the 15 century that it was augmented into "creation", adding in the human element into existence. My favorite form of creation is video performance. Always conceptual. Using the body as the material. As the soil. I am able to grow through manipulation of my own body. The material. You do not need words in order to speak.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in other artists and movements such as Mark Bradford, Kerry James Marshall, Chris Burden, Marina Abramovich, and alike. I find inspiration from my own mind, too. Within art making, you must not separate the art from the artist. YOU become the work. You bleed. You leave the transforming stains.
What would you do with $25,000?25k would help make great changes in my personal and working life. I would pay off portions of my student loans from Art School (CalArts) and save the rest for materials to help foster and grow my practice. The prize package is a dream come true. The right people need to see my work. I believe it is something unlike those we’ve seen before. Thank you🫶
