The term “realism” is something I find to be quite limiting, though I would place my work into that category of art. I love drawing real people, yes. But more importantly I love highlighting the little things about people that are often overlooked, both literally and figuratively. In “real life”, people don’t notice or care about that touch of sunlight that hits the edge of an eyelash. Or the way a person’s smile changes between the ages of 30 and 31. I notice. I care.
Where do you find inspiration?Dramatically so, my entire life is shaped around the movies that I love. When I was a kid, I just wanted to get that character on paper and say “I did that”. Later on, it was about capturing a moment. One that shifted a character, and thus, me. Today? I’m most inspired by moments in time. The baroque era. The renaissance. Live models. Thrifted set pieces. It’s time I create my own movies. My own characters. If I win this contest, I’ll get to show you the beginning of my first one ever.
What would you do with $25,000?Genuinely? I’d cry. Then afterwards, have a nice sushi dinner. And then I’d go home and draw.
