I enjoy creating adornment that has something to say, for the wearer or for striking a conversation with others. I have been a metalsmith most my life and am now knee deep into leather craft, particularly leather carving, which I find doesn’t have the recognition that other fine craft mediums have. I would like to progress more Into how I can marry my fine metalsmithing skllls with leather craft to make very unique one-of-a-kind pieces, not only adornment, but also art for the home.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration from historical studies, along with the great deep woods in the White Mountains, NH to the wild crashing coasts of Greater Portland, ME. I also find connection in local spaces with people most inspiring, hearing about their perspective of the world and how those around me wield their sadness or find their happiness. It’s a way of taking the temperature of where we are in the community and feeling what is needed most. These days that list is sadly too long.
What would you do with $25,000?I feel further training & tools of leather carving will allow me to express myself more broadly and most uniquely as an artist. I would love the opportunity to train with a master leather carver in Europe. Maybe one in Italy or Spain, where there are still traditional leather carvers that are carving in a more classical European style. This would take a little time to find ‘the one’- but I would be so grateful to learn from an old world teacher that speaks from my old world fine craft heart.
