Marisa Calabro

Creating art is an outlet necessary for my survival, and for me that is music. Churning lyrics and sound from my pain is therapeutic.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Music and songwriting is what I spend the most of my time on, but I also enjoy drawing, photography, visual design, and acting. I’ve always loved the arts in general, often combining worlds like performing in musical theatre productions. So I suppose when it comes to picking my “favorite” form of art to create, it would have to be music. With how compounding life’s pressures are, coupled with trauma and mental health ailments - for me, music provides the most therapeutic release.

Where do you find inspiration?

I usually find my inspiration from my thoughts and feelings based on my lived experiences, as well as others’. Going through certain situations myself, writing songs around it can provide more insight for myself. And if not, then at least I get to “talk” about it so to speak. I also write music based on the stories of others as well - often when I hear or read stories of victims, survivors, or certain things people are going through.. I’ll be inspired to create and shape a song around it.

What would you do with $25,000?

I have been wanting to release an EP or possibly an album for over a decade now. After having to flee my home due to abuse, I now have to live with a parent where there is no quiet space to use my microphone for a home recording. So I would use this opportunity to rent studio time so that I can get some good quality vocals recorded and mastered for the songs of mine that I’d like to release. Hopefully I’d also be able to save some to invest towards my children’s futures as well.
