Meredith Brion

It is healing, and is the purest form of storytelling; a way of making sense of life, felt experiences, and responding to this world.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Right now, I'm in love with textiles, am a long life weaver and use natural dyes in my practice. I think dance and music has always been a part of my practice too since an early age, and I combine all of this to inform and construct my work. Everything is a tool in this life, if you chose to channel and focus; my emotions, experiences, takes shape with my craft and technical skill, honed from dedicating myself to learning a craft; it can all coexist and make incredible, meaningful art.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere, I see inspiration living in everything around me, but I feel largely nourished by nature. I love being in isolation in nature. To deeply drop in and let landscape, time or music inform my dance piece, music, a weaving, or a dye pattern. I respond deeply to sitting with nature in this way, like a meditation, allowing myself to experience and witness nature is a deeply moving experience if you're willing to listen, you connect to a deep richness of life, one that seems to surpass time.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would use a portion to support my public engagement art project: a donation-based indigo dye workshop series I currently self- fund and host twice yearly for the public, welcoming participants of all ages and skill levels. These workshops create an accessible opportunity for people to engage with art while keeping costs minimal. The remainder would go toward materials, studio assistance, and educational opportunities to further expand my practice and craft.
