Michael Bartley

It is how I engage the tension between horror and beauty, brokenness and hope, pain and joy, and the space where tears and laughter meet.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

Open form woodturning is a creative style that focuses on artistic expression rather than traditional, symmetrical forms. Turners carve away sections to create openings, emphasizing negative space and sculptural design. Natural wood features like grain, knots, and cracks are highlighted, giving each piece a unique character. Often combining turning with carving or burning, these works are valued more as art than functional objects

Where do you find inspiration?

My work in hospice, my background in philosophy, and my deep love for various forms of music shape how I see and understand the world.

What would you do with $25,000?

To help reinforce my engagement with various artists and locations wherein I could grow and co-work in my work.
