Poetry puts me “in the now”, as Eckart Tolle says. I write to describe the small things in life, as a defense against the large things.

Thanks for the opportunity to compete!! I love to write poetry. My poems are short, oftentimes sonnet size of 14 lines. I observe something small in detail, then describe it in a poem, then turn towards a comparison with our complicated lives. I strive to write with humility and kindness, yet I also include deep meaning for the reader that reads purposely and slowly.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in small things. Yesterday I watched a cardinal and a grosbeak stare each other down for several seconds, then they resumed eating, right next to each other! I find that incredible, and worthy of exploration. The other day my two dogs were squabbling over a pile of deer droppings. I thought it was hilarious. This morning I watched the faces in traffic. I trust small things more for wisdom.
What would you do with $25,000?Wow, I’m not sure. I would buy some books, give a little to each of my adult children, but mostly I’d take my wife to Bali for a wonderful vacation. I feel myself wanting to come up with things to buy that are worthy of prize money. It seems like I should donate at least a little. I’d sure like to have the money, but the opportunity to display my poems is more important to me. Having said that, my dear wife has dreamed of Bali her entire life. It would be really fun to give her that.
