Receive Text UpdatesNorthwest coast art or “formline”. This artform traditionally can be done in many mediums. Totem pole carving, appliqué for button robes, metal and ivory engraving, the famous Chilkat robes, just as a few examples. Being able to tie the traditional forms into modern mediums is how I show respect to all those who came before me. Creating a bridge between the traditional and modern.
Where do you find inspiration? My indigenous heritage, in our culture art imitates life. Masks are carved to be danced, to tell stories. Our button robes are designed to show the wearers identity, each item passed down from generation to generation. The northwest coast art forms have always been passed down from master to apprentice since the time immemorial, to know that one day, everything that I’m learning from my master will be my lessons to teach to the next generation. These ideas keep me rooted and proud to create.
What would you do with $25,000?With 25,000 I would have funds to help jumpstart my career in becoming a Northwest coast arts and culture teacher for a living. - Financing my first totem project, Focused on teaching and guiding youth through helping me complete the job. -New tools for myself, and tools to share during potential art classes. Also being a father of 2 growing beautiful boys, I would love to take them on a holiday or vacation, to experience something new and to teach them to reap the rewards of hard work.
