Art allows me to reconcile with both historical and modern concepts of oppression, greed and the devaluation of life in an approachable way.

For a long time I would say portraiture, but I think in this season on life I would say figurative work that paints a narrative portrait of the world we live. Paintings that go beyond a single image of one person, but allow the viewer to see themselves reflected in the work, whether good or bad. I enjoy being able to tell a story with my work that both educates and moves people.
Where do you find inspiration?I draw a lot of inspiration from history and the parallels I see in modern life. Moving to the South, going to former rice plantations, learning history, and being sensitive to the air and atmosphere around me has really informed the direction of my artistic practice. Parenthood has also given me an event greater depth and with my connection to the past. I think this is because despite the horrors and the trials of the past, life continued. Family and legacy carried on.
What would you do with $25,000?I would reinvest the funds into my artistic development. I would be able to make improvements to my studio space to accommodate the creation of larger scale works. I would also put it towards curating exhibitons and other art forward community events that both inform and educate while allowing people of all ages to view my art. And honestly I would take my husband out on a nice date to thank him for his steadfast support of me, and the pursuit of my ambitions and dreams.
