Mike J. Marin

My love for indigenous storytelling started with my grandma telling me scary stories from our Washoe tribe. So I do Native horror movies.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I fell in love with storytelling at an early age, first with grandma's traditional scary stories and then horror films. My passion since then has always been to make films and be involved in the whole filmmaking process. I have to tell my culture's stories, to immortalize them on film so they are never forgotten. Even the scary ones. So, I honor my grandma via filmmaking.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everyone has a story. My personal one has a dark side to it. I look to the fear I carry from trauma and take control of it by creating from it and in a way controlling it and shaping it how I want to tell it. More importantly, to show the next generation that you can turn bad things into good things in your own way, creatively, traditionally, and medicinally.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would put the money towards a project that would hopefully get my foot in the door to open it up for other indigenous artists with the same passion and love of creating art in any form. To put them center stage instead of being the backdrop. If I can do that, pay it forward, then it will be a successful career. And if I have anything left, maybe pay some bills:)
