mike light

My Grandson just asked me why I draw etc. I told him the same reason a bird flies. It's what it was born to do. 37 years in construction.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I love cartooning in the classic mediums, pen and brush. I wanted to be one of the idiots that drew for Mad magazine, submitted many times. Next is any subject in pen and ink, but also love working in acrylics. I love pencil also, and have a light touch. I also work with copper sheet and LOVE seeing the contoured metal, using patinas, is almost like metal tie dye. I don't know what it's going to look like exactly, they are all different. Copper changes with the light in the room.

Where do you find inspiration?

I'm inspired for my cartoons in everyday people, nature is next, drawing trees, animals of all sorts, but my greatest inspiration is doing pictures for people I know as gifts for important events to fit their personality. I do a picture for my Grandson's birthday each year and incorporate his age into the work some way. Friends that have lost pets love having a portrait of their friends. Comic books have always been an inspiration.

What would you do with $25,000?

After raising a family and being tasked with caring for elderly family members who have recently moved on to their next wave length, my wife and I are now free to travel. We were married at 18 and never had the opportunity to spend on anything for ourselves, so now we want to see the world. All the major art of Europe has been a dream since I was a country boy growing up in rural Oregon.
