Creating art for me means transmuting traumatic experiences into something positive, it brings purpose to my life in a transformative way.

My favorite mediums to work in are photography and film. However, creating art with a socially conscious purpose is what really excites me. I am currently working on a photo project called “Grocery Carts in the Wild” capturing images of displaced grocery carts found in unusual circumstances as metaphorical references to late stage capitalism and housing insecurity. I was motivated to bring attention to this issue because I was a child who experienced poverty and housing instability.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in exploring the city, poetry, films, quiet walks at night, and the way light and shadows fall into frame. As an art educator, I also derive a considerable amount of inspiration from my students whose creative earnestness keeps me motivated to work hard.
What would you do with $25,000?This would have a tremendous impact on me. As an artist who is also a single mom, I often don’t have the funds to pursue big artistic dreams. I would use the prize to produce my short film: LIMERENCE, a surrealist noir exploring the themes of isolation and connection in the digital age.
