What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite mediums to work in are photography and film. However, creating art with a socially conscious purpose is what really excites me. I am currently working on a photo project called “Grocery Carts in the Wild” capturing images of displaced grocery carts found in unusual circumstances as metaphorical references to late stage capitalism and housing insecurity. I was motivated to bring attention to this issue because I was a child who experienced poverty and housing instability.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in exploring the city, poetry, films, quiet walks at night, and the way light and shadows fall into frame. As an art educator, I also derive a considerable amount of inspiration from my students whose creative earnestness keeps me motivated to work hard.

What would you do with $25,000?

This would have a tremendous impact on me. As an artist who is also a single mom, I often don’t have the funds to pursue big artistic dreams. I would use the prize to produce my short film: LIMERENCE, a surrealist noir exploring the themes of isolation and connection in the digital age.
