I create art because it lets me turn my native heritage into something inspiring, it encourages me to do storytelling differently and truly.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
One of my favorite types of art to create is mixed-media work inspired by my Native culture, built around the idea of Diné (Navajo) philosophy of Hózhó living in beauty, harmony, balance, and health rather than rigid symmetry. My work tends to be figurative, using marks, space, and subtle reflective elements to evoke traditional practices and connections to both land and spirit. Overall, my art focuses on relationships, mental, physical, and spiritual, emphasizing respect and interconnectedness.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration through my traditional stories, especially those reflecting the Diné philosophy of Hózhó. Traditional songs and teachings shape how I approach meaning in my work. I’m also inspired by other Native artists, past and present, whose work carries culture forward in evolving ways. Models and everyday people influence how I capture form and expression, while social media exposes me to diverse styles and ideas, helping balance my cultural roots with contemporary perspectives.
What would you do with $25,000?If I received $25,000, I would first take care of essential bills to create stability for myself and my family. I would help support my family’s needs, including food and daily expenses. I would invest in a reliable vehicle to improve access to work and school. Continuing my education is a priority so I can build a better future. If possible, I would also begin starting a small business, creating long-term financial independence and a way to give back to my community.
