Being an artist and being a high school teacher are two sides of the same coin. I work to inspire my students and, in turn, they inspire me.

I consider myself a diverse artist and have difficulty choosing just one medium to work with. The mediums I use are directly related to their accessibility. In recent years, I have been exploring abstraction and depicting mood or energy rather than traditional representational work. My most recent series attempts to represent different genres of jazz music by limiting the shapes, colors, and lines I use. If money were no object, my favorite medium to use would be glass.
Where do you find inspiration? The cyclical nature of being a working artist and an art teacher fuels much of my inspiration. There is a lot of internal struggle that comes with being a teenager, and I pride myself on providing a space where young people can discover and explore their identity. I see a curiosity and budding sense of ethics developing as students encounter and navigate “grown-up” problems for the first time. This lets me access the whimsical and emotional nature of my inner child and find inspiration.
What would you do with $25,000?When I was getting my BA in Studio Art, I discovered a passion for glassblowing. It’s my favorite medium to work with, but it’s quite inaccessible. Blowing glass is expensive in every sense; It’s time-consuming, taxing on the body, and financially difficult. Glass blowers are few and far between as it is considered to be a dying art due to its high cost and machine automation. With this money, I can get back into the glass shop and continue to grow and develop my craft as a glass artist.
