Nikki Brooks

Art for me has been oracle of my healing and the voice of my muteness. It started the very first time I picked up a crayon at the age of 4.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

I love installation because it is truly storytelling in ANY space, and the spacial semiotics between objects allows me to assemble specific imagery I need to supplant the audience in. When I worked in collage oftentimes I was advised that the visual story elements within that pictorial space were not meant for 2-D, but deserved to step into space. Upon leaving grad school I soon would learn the power of all elements in an immersive space.

Where do you find inspiration?

My work as a visual artist is rooted in the lived experiences, histories, and resilience of Black communities, with a particular focus on Black women. I am deeply inspired by ancestry and legacy—the understanding that history is not distant, but something that lives within us and moves through us. I see my practice as a way to honor those who came before me while creating space for contemporary narratives to exist with clarity and intention.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would pay up on my studio fee, studio storage, car note/maintenance, art supplies, bless one or two local non- profits and save the rest for a rainy day.
