I get really engrossed in creating large scale figurative paintings composed of multiple panels, exploring my relationship to my southern American society. Although I love my mixed media wild style, the longevity and luminosity of oil paint is the spiritual bedrock of my work. With every brushstroke of oil paint I’m praying to be remembered in the future for more than the darkest phase of my life.
Where do you find inspiration?I'm inspired by the Buddhist idea that we are all inherently good. I discovered this idea in solitary on death row where the simple narrative good and evil dominates. This idea has given me the belief necessary to feel I'm worth seeking recovery and survival. My work though often challenges the ideas that I have met along the way that have tried but failed to convince me otherwise.
What would you do with $25,000?First, buy my fiancee a proper ring, fly her to Texas and marry her. Buy my nieces and nephews a gift, then use the rest for living expenses and to buy any art supplies when I can get my hands on them. With my fiancee currently being the sole bread winner this would give us a lot of breathing room in our humble life.
