Making art allows me to connect to the pureness of this experience and channel that energy into tangible objects that can be shared.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
Abstract art is my favorite art to create. I start with a concept and make marks, forms and shapes that reflect my idea. At some point, I let the concept go and the experience of making takes over. I try to stay present with the act of creating. I revisit artworks over several sessions and let them continue to grow and change. I try to never get stuck on anything being too precious, and let the work reduce or expand into whatever form it needs to be.
Where do you find inspiration?I’m most inspired when I’m out on my bike, experiencing my urban surroundings. Traveling by bike affords me a pretty unique way to interact with different types of spaces and environments. I’m constantly examining things that humans create: buildings, landscapes, infrastructure. I investigate the way those objects decay over time, and how we respond and mitigate that decay – and how it interacts with its natural surroundings. I translate it into color, material, shape and form choices.
What would you do with $25,000?$25,000 would afford me the opportunity to secure a larger space to produce my work. My current studio is small and doesn’t have space for larger works, multiple projects going at once or to accommodate studio visits. I envision my pieces as larger sculptures you can walk up to and interact with and my paintings covering entire walls. A larger space would allow me to realize my visions, create several works at once and share my art more easily by hosting regular studio visits.
