My favorite art to create is about what is important, special, and meaningful to me. For example, I like to paint about my family--both the living and the ones who have passed. I paint about my culture and traditions such as Day of the Dead. I'm from Mexico, and creating art about death is as important as create art about life. I have changed through time, and my art has changed too. I prefer to create art that reflects the times that we are living in because as artists we have a duty to do.
Where do you find inspiration?More than an inspiration, today I feel a responsibility with our brothers and sisters in Gaza or our communities that are constantly attacked by ICE and many more issues affecting people, especially the marginalized groups. So, many times I wake up and want to express my anger and my support at the same time about these issues. My art is turning more into a reflection of the times we are living.
What would you do with $25,000?I would put $10,000 in my kid's 529 Education Investment. They are currently 14 years old and want to be an artist. So this money would help enormously for their future education. With the other $15,000, I would continue with a project, to create a sequel of a bilingual graphic novel I made in 2023 titled, "My Grandpa Genaro/Mi Abuelo Genaro." I was able to made the graphic novel with a grant from the California Arts Council. The book was free for the community and I would do something similar.
