Connect What is your favorite type of art to create?

I've always been drawn to creating figurative work, using the human form and expression as a vehicle for narrative. My practice explores the duality within portraiture, where realism and surrealism intersect to tell significant stories. By juxtaposing lifelike detail within elements of caricature, I construct alternate realties that both reflect and reinterpret lived experiences.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in many ways. As an African-American woman, my culture deeply shapes my work. I draw from our history and everyday experiences to uncover and celebrate our beauty. I'm also drawn to what people deem as "ugly," the difficult moments we have as human beings and often try to hide. I bring them to light to reveal their sublime depth and how they shape us in the end. Lastly, film inspires me. I study cinematography to understand how stories are framed, and bring that into my work.

What would you do with $25,000?

With this award, I am committed to investing in my practice while contributing to the Chicago art community. I plan to curate my first exhibition in 2027 and deepen collaborations with fellow Chicago artists. I also aim to produce prints of my original works to engage actively in local art festivals. Additionally, this support will allow me to explore and not limit myself in practice. It will help me purchase materials to begin creating murals, as I aspire to bring my work to public spaces.
