I create art because it expresses what words can't. I enter a space of joy and frustration which pushes me to do better in my art and life.
You decide who will appear in Artforum Magazine, take home $25,000, and display their work at The Art of Elysium's Salon!
I love to paint. What excites me most are new ideas, bold color, stylized figures, emotional symbolism, and fine linework. When these parts come together my work feels most like me. I'm drawn to creating pieces that feel intentional , with clean edges and consistent surfaces. That part challenges me, but I like it because it pushes me to grow and take my work more seriously.
Where do you find inspiration?I find inspiration in my 25 years of teaching low- income and migrant children.Working closely with young children and their families has given me a persceptive that many people don't have. Those experiences, both challemges and the resilience I've witnessed continue to shape the emotional core of my work. I also draw inspiration from the natural world. I enjoy growing plants and flowers and have a deep love for animals. These elements also find their way into my paintings.
What would you do with $25,000?If I were awardred the $25,000 prize, I would use it to both give back and invest in my growth as an artist. I would donate 5% to support art supplies for Mirror Lake Elementary School in Federal Way WA, the MLK Center in Tacoma WA and the St. Joseph Cancer Center for children in Tacoma,WA. These organizations reflect the communities and experiences that have shaped my life and work. The remainder of the award would go toward my artistic practice and development and a larger studio.
