Payton DeCrenza

Creating art pushes me to be the kind of person I’d look up to as a kid. It helps me to adventure past comfortably, and find beauty in life.

What is your favorite type of art to create?

My favorite art to create is the art that’s unexpected. A new way of creating that allows me to experiment and not be scared to make mistakes. I love being a beginner and having the privilege of experiencing something for the first time. It fuels my imagination and brings my inner-child forward; like discovering a new playground to infiltrate with mischief and wonder.Whether it be music, painting, design, etc. I know that with each new beginning I get to explore a different version of myself.

Where do you find inspiration?

My main sources of inspiration come from my childhood, personal identity, and the people that flow love into my life. I enjoy incorporating quirky subjects, bold colors, and sparkles in my work as nods to the curious and imaginative child I was. I also focus on those closest to me as a reminder of their love and contribution to who I am. While many of my works may have deeper personal meanings, I always aim to showcase love and childlike joy in the midst of a world so heavy.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would put the 25k towards paying off my art education as well my medical debts. I am a current student at Savannah College of Art and Design, and while here I’ve faced multiple physical challenges setting me back financially. I have had an emergency appendectomy, been diagnosed with cancer, and fractured two of my vertebrae, permanently affecting me. Coming from a low-income household, this significantly impacted me and my family, and attaining this award would be a transformative opportunity.
