What is your favorite type of art to create?

I like to paint, draw, and create collages, and I enjoy different aspects of each practice. Painting is more strategic and technical, and often the end stage of a visual concept. I love the rich colors and blending I can achieve with oil paint, and the connection with the centuries-old process of stretching a canvas. Drawing and collage allows for my intuition to flow through quickly, as this stage is where the imagery is developed.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am inspired by the surrealism movement, and the art that was created during that time period. I reference old photos in my work, and the figures mostly appear as ghosts -- grayscale and glowing. To me, they feel nostalgic, yet eerie. Familiar, yet unfamiliar. I am also inspired by dream recall, where I pull images that come to me in dreams into reality. The dialog continues from there.

What would you do with $25,000?

I would invest it into my art practice, and continue to create more large scale paintings. It would also provide the opportunity to open a small gallery and community art space in the Grayslake area of Illinois outside of Chicago, where I live.
