I create art to make meaning from fragments—memory, history, dreams, and images that might otherwise remain disconnected.

I like to paint, draw, and create collages, and I enjoy different aspects of each practice. Painting is more strategic and technical, and often the end stage of a visual concept. I love the rich colors and blending I can achieve with oil paint, and the connection with the centuries-old process of stretching a canvas. Drawing and collage allows for my intuition to flow through quickly, as this stage is where the imagery is developed.
Where do you find inspiration?I am inspired by the surrealism movement, and the art that was created during that time period. I reference old photos in my work, and the figures mostly appear as ghosts -- grayscale and glowing. To me, they feel nostalgic, yet eerie. Familiar, yet unfamiliar. I am also inspired by dream recall, where I pull images that come to me in dreams into reality. The dialog continues from there.
What would you do with $25,000?I would invest it into my art practice, and continue to create more large scale paintings. It would also provide the opportunity to open a small gallery and community art space in the Grayslake area of Illinois outside of Chicago, where I live.
