I love so many styles, and I have about 17 sketchbooks for every mood. if I am angsty I hide abstracts in a beat-up copy of ‘The picture of Durian Gray.’ If my mind is orderly and I feel I can keep tight control I will grab my expensive watercolor book that my friend handmade and do something careful and tight. If I only have a few minutes but I’m in a meditative state (or want to get there) I do Chinese ink drawings. The work that gets the most applause are my watercolor portraits of elderly
Where do you find inspiration?When I was a teenager I had a mental event that was traumatic. I entered ‘unreality’ that was like crashing painfully out of the safe indoors, through a window pane that cut deep but opened to a strange, beautiful and real dimension. I have lived with so much health, but being an artist is like being that metaphorical window pane, allowing others to look safely into an important space beyond the realism of our 5 senses (and AI!)
What would you do with $25,000?I love to give away art supplies. I believe I am more of a ‘b’ artist but I dream of discovering a master artist through my classes or art donations. I would go to Kenya with a mural artist and help my friend-headmaster rally his students to paint a mural. I could set up schools I am connected to with local artists and ongoing? supplies. I dream of a community studio in my town of Greenwood and have a lot of supplies to start that—leftover money would go towards that.
